Creating Maps from Imported Data Using CartoDB

Learning Objective: The purpose of this exercise is to understand how to present data from an imported dataset to generate a visual map. We will be using CartoDB, which requires no coding skills.

What you need:

  • A modern Web browser, such as Firefox or Chrome.
  • A CartoDB account (see instrutions below).
  • A Google account.
  • Fielded data that includes geocoordinates.

Get a CartoDB account
As part of this class, you will receive a free Magellan academic account for CartoDB that lets you publish and maintain up to 10 tables / maps at a time.

First you must set up a standard free account. Go to and click Get Started to create your account. You can upgrade to a Magellan account using the code you receive in class.

The following tutorials take approximately 10 minutes each:

1) Creating a simple map of points

2) Georeferencing

3) Map Election Results

Embed the output of each tutorial into the class blog.
