Julia Smith’s Assignment 5
After discovering I had no more georeferencing credits, I had to get creative with this assignment. I used the layer of “counties_ny” from Carto DB and then merged the already georeferenced counties with data from data.ny.gov.
The next step was to take the “Jail Population by County: Beginning 1997” and narrowing down the data to the most recent, 2014. I then merged the 2014 data with Carto DB’s georeferenced counties to create one map. Next, I layered the USA Urban Layers and Clusters to show the direct relationship between high imprisonment rates and urban centers, where more people usually live, and more often lower socioeconomic class.
This map displays how the New York jail population in 2014 was dispersed. Along with the number of people in jail, this map shows the areas that are more urban. Urban means according to the U.S. Census, “The Census Bureau identifies two types of urban areas:
- Urbanized Areas (UAs) of 50,000 or more people;
- Urban Clusters (UCs) of at least 2,500 and less than 50,000 people.” In this map it is easy to see that the areas that are a deeper red also have a gray spot on top of it. These show how the population in jail relate to the population in the county.
