Assignment 8 Julia Smith

Assignment 8 Julia Smith

This chart shows the number of women in Congress from 1919-1990 by taking snippets of each decade. All data was collected from the Congressional Research Service and shows how women’s presence in Congress has subtly grown throughout the decades. However, women in America make up 51 percent of the population and still only hold 35.8 percent of the seats in congress. These statistics would look even smaller if it closed in on women of color. Women of color make up 50 spots in congress since 1964 when the first woman of color, Hawaii representative Patsy Mink, won her election. 313 women have served in the house of representatives or senate since 1917 when the first woman ever was elected, according to the History, Art and Archives of the United States House of Representatives. These numbers are expected to only grow larger over time.
