From Columbine to Sandy Hook to Virginia Tech – it seems like the list of school shootings never ends. In fact, in the last 15 years there have been more than 60 fatal shootings on school and university campuses in America. While laws have been proposed, and in some cases passed, the concern over the safety of our schools still looms.
The idea for this project began over a year ago, when I was in London and received devastating news about another school shooting back in the states. Unfortunately, I can’t remember exactly which it was, perhaps because there have been so many. Regardless, this prompted me to do some research about the precautions or lack of precautions taken by school and university officials to prevent these crimes from happening in the future. One thing led to another and the result is this article, full with three sets of interactive tools to give you a clearer understanding about the state of safety in our schools.
**Suicides are not included in this article. If you are aware of a school shooting that resulted in a fatality that is left out of this article, please reach me via Twitter @kzubrow.
